Went out this morning and had the first post-operation x-rays taken of the right hip. Last x-rays I saw were taken right after I arrived at the ER back on June 18th. The scanner does not want to pick up a lot of detail from the new ‘pictures’, but it is obvious that a bit of extra hardware has been added. Time to take a trip and see what happens when I go through the metal detectors.

wow. Thats quite the hardware! I’m assuming it’s titanium. Now when you’re in airport security, they’ll probably send you through those new mm-wave scanners where they can see through your clothes….won’t that be a treat!

Doc Kim - I assume it is Ti, also. Can’t wait to have the security folks peeking ‘under the curtain’ so to speak.
Ali - I was not given any options.

pretty impressive looking image. you might turn on some traffic lights (the magnetic field interfering metal detecting kind) with that.

Holy cow! Will it stay in forever? My grandma had to have some hardware in her knee for a bit, but they pulled it out so she arranged the pieces on a black mat board & framed it. It looks like a butterfly. I bet you could get yours to look like a bike frame…

twinkie - interesting thought. Might help on some of those problem lights that never seem to detect my bike.
Groover - If I keep going I may become the ‘6 Million Dollar man’, at least in that I may ring up close to that in medical bills.
Panda - I am not sure if they will leave it in. The one in my wrist was left in as it was not causing any problems. They even asked again about problems with it when I broke my thumb to see if the plate and screws should be removed. The hip hardware seems to be a bit more extensive, so maybe more likely to cause problems; Ms Chatterbox claims she can see the bulge on the side of the hip caused by the extra bulk.

homeland security will be your friend. Of course that all depends on which airport. some seem to have the metal detectors set to go off due to a hair pin, others I swear you could walk in with a gun.

they may have to strip search you! ack!
morgan broke his hip a long, long time ago - on a ride. they left everything in for a while until it really started bothering him - i can’t remember how long, but he eventually asked them to take it out.

Goose - my wrist plate/screws has never set off the metal detectors, but there is much less mass. It may be interesting on the first few flights seeing what happens.
Lauren - yep, my strategy will be to see if it can stay, otherwise get it removed. Sure that opening back up the hip will mean another couple of weeks of sitting on the sidelines.
