Not all messengers necessarily ride fixed-gear bikes. It could be the other way around though. Because after hipsters saw what most messengers rode (fixed-gear bikes) they suddenly found this sort of bike(which has been around for a very long time) to be stylish, unique, hip. Afterwards this became the growing culture that is the fixie rider. Well, not really.
